No matter what, during those first couple months, your sleep is very limited. But there are things you can do to help make the nights smoother! These are some of the basic tips and items to help with the first few months. I will have other blogs coming soon for the older stages!
Routine
Routine is HUGE in helping your baby nap better and sleep at night! I followed the “typical days” routine in the back of Moms on Call VERY closely and my little one was sleeping “through the night” before she was 2 months old. (About 9 pm - 4 am). Now every baby is different, but a routine should help.
White Noise Machine - Hatch Rest +
We have two white noise machines that have been great! One that plugs into the wall and stays in her room—Hatch Rest+— and one for one the go— the LectroFan Alpha Portable Sleep Sound Machine. There are two different versions of the hatch. I recommend spending the extra $30 to get the Rest +, it is more intuitive with Bluetooth on your phone. We bought the regular one first and ended up buying the Rest + after anyways.
Humidifier
Breathable Mattress - by Newton
If you are skipping the bassinet all together or transitioning your newborn to the crib, a breathable mattress should be a no brainer! We have the Newton It is safer and will help you sleep better not worrying what will happens if your baby rolls over. To ease your mind, I recommended shoving your face against the mattress and testing it yourself! It really IS breathable.
Bassinet - SNOO
The price tag can be a bit shocking, so I don't think we would've even considered the SNOO if it wasn't handed down to us by a friend. After using it, we wouldn't blink to pay the full price for one. I couldn't imagine the first 3 months without the Snoo Bassinet by the Happiest Baby. These bassinets are smart cribs that safely sooth the baby when they wake up and cry. Of course sometimes they just need mommy or daddy to cuddle, but this helps put them back to sleep when it isn't feeding time.
You can buy the SNOO or now even rent directly from The Happiest Baby! As your baby grows, you will likely need to get another size swaddle.
Canopy Bedside Humidifier
These are important especially in the winter months and when your child is sick. We have tested a few different humidifiers out, running into issues with puddles, too much moisture and bright lights. By far the best one is the Canopy Bedside Humidifier. It is on the more expensive side, but well worth it. Best part, you do not have to clean it out all the time or use distilled water!
Monitor - Infant Optics
There are a ton of great monitors out there with different types of technology. We preferred to go with one not connected to Bluetooth or WiFi, the Infant Optics monitor. It is easy to mount, zoom and moved the camera placement. Remotely. Because it does not use WiFi, it cannot be hacked and is easy for travel.
